Prospective Cheerleaders and Parents:
Thank you for your interest in the Leesville Road High School Cheerleading program! The following provides important information and details for the selection of the upcoming season squad members.
On August 1, 2009 (SATURDAY) we will begin the process of selecting both JV and Varsity squads for the 2009-2010 football, basketball, and competition seasons. The selection process will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room of Leesville Road High School and will begin at 8am and end at 11:00am each day. The selection process will continue on August 3, 2009 (MONDAY) and August 4, 2008 (TUESDAY). We are hopeful that we will be able to select both JV and Varsity teams by August 4, 2009 at 11:00am, but note that we do reserve the right to continue to that evening (August 4; 5-7pm) if needed. Squad members will be chosen by the Leesville Road High School Cheerleading Coaching staff.
In order to participate in the squad selection and for the following seasons if chosen, each prospective cheerleader MUST have Athletic Participation and Medical Waiver forms on file with the school PRIOR to July 14, 2009. This includes a current physical. In addition, release forms will need to be on file with the school. Forms may be dropped off at the main office. Please understand that you will NOT be able to participate in squad selection process without having first been cleared through our Athletic Trainer. There are NO exceptions to this rule… please just get the forms turned in by July 14,2009 to avoid any confusion. Forms may be downloaded off www.leesville.org through the Athletics link. In addition, physicals will be provided for $20 at Leesville Road High School for any student who will be attending Leesville Road High School in 2009-2010. The date for this event is May 21 st and cheerleading prospects should arrive at 6:30pm. Physicals will take place in the auxiliary gym. .
In addition to the necessary forms, each prospective cheerleader must be within eligible academic standing in order to be a member of the 2009-2010 LRHS Cheerleading squad. Eligibility guidelines include maintaining at minimum 1.5 GPA, having less than 13.5 total absences for the prior semester, be passing ¾ of all classes, and be on the correct track for graduation. Every promoted freshman is automatically eligible for athletics in accordance to Wake County guidelines.
Regarding the selection process, there are twelve positions available on the Junior Varsity squad and sixteen positions available on the Varsity squad. Freshmen, sophomores and juniors are eligible for Junior Varsity positions and freshmen through seniors are eligible for Varsity positions. Squads will consist of those athletes meeting the requirements in the highest capacity. In addition to skill, we are seeking student athletes who will best represent Leesville Road High School . Please note that it is up to the individual discretion of the coaches as to whether or not all positions will be filled on each team. We are looking for quality individuals and not to simply “fill our spots.”
Once the squads are selected, practices will begin immediately and will continue through the start of school. Practice times are tentatively set as follows, with a MANDATORY PARENT MEETING ON TUESDAY AUGUST 4, 2009 AT 7:00PM .
JV – 8:00am – 10:00am AND 5:00 – 6:30pm Varsity – 8:00 am – 10:00am AND 5:00pm – 7:00pm
PRACTICES ARE MANDATORY SO PLEASE DO NOT PLAN ANYTHING DURING THESE TIME PERIODS AS ABSENCES WILL NOT BE EXCUSED.
Attached you will find a guideline of skills in which we are seeking for both Junior Varsity and Varsity positions. Please note that YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE EVERY SKILL LISTED, IT IS A SELECTION RUBRIC WHEREIN THE LATTER SKILLS LISTED RECEIVE HIGHER VALUE.
Should you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to email Coach Reathaford at sreathaford@wcpss.net .
Thank you and we are looking forward to another successful year of Leesville Road High School Cheerleading!
Shelly Reathaford, Varsity Cheerleading Coach
